The (im)possible success of disadvantaged students. Reflections on education, migration and social change

2019

The paper focuses on the ?unexpected pathways? of successful students with an immigrant background: these biographical routes, that seems socially impossible, raise theoretical issues around the individual-society, actor-structure relationship. Disadvantaged students who succeed represent a sociological challenge in the attempt to understand atypical situations and to identify the institutional processes and the structural opportunities that facilitate them, reducing ethnic inequalities in education. This framework is the starting point of the Su.Per. project (Success in educational pathways of students with immigrant background), based on the collection of written autobiographies of 65 imm…

Amplitude and peculiar aspects of social inequalities in the French school

2005

05021http://www.scielo.br/pdf/ep/v31n1/a02v31n1.pdf; International audience; French sociology denounces vehemently since the end of the 1960s the important and standing social inequalities both in the access to the different levels of education and in school success stricto sensu. Such criticism has taken the form of a general theory put forward by Bourdieu and Passeron, in which such social inequalities are shown to be the necessary result of the functioning of the school institution. And this thesis, hugely influential not just among sociologists, but also more widely, has contributed to foster certain fatalism, since it establishes that the very function of school is to reproduce and leg…

Encouraging the success of foreign students in schools: reinforcing problem solving in mathematics

2015

In the present chapter we will explore education success in mathematics, in particular as regards reinforcing problem solving, trying to overcome a widespread view of deficit, which leads to attention being focused on what students cannot do or do not know how to do and which, in the majority of cases, is due to poor language proficiency. By focusing solely on these areas one runs the risk of involving students in simple cognitive activities that require the memorisation of rules and algorithms and the application of resolution strategies, which have already been dealt with, instead of more complex cognitive activities such as problem solving and argumentation. The resolution of mathematics…

The singular school succes of teachers' children : any specific educational parental pratices ?

2012

From primary to secondary school, teachers' children get the best results. However, very little research has looked in to the family processes on which this singular success is built. Based on the demonstration of the link between "achieve the best school performance" and "being a child of whom at least one parent is a teacher", this study aims to establish family factors, in particular parental educational practices, that explain this significant "teacher effect". From econometric analysis of the Panel 95 survey, it transpires that, on the one hand, teachers' children are the most likely to benefit from the best practices of socialization and support at school and, on the other hand, that …

Resilienza ed inclusione

2017

2007

This study aim to improve knowledge about individual and contextual factors of success in music education during elementary level's first year. There are three main subjects : acquisitions' social inequalities, teacher-effect and children' interest about in class musical activities. Two musical tests (one at the beginning of the year, another at the end) were administrated to 1184 students living in Burgondy. Questionnaries completed by various actors (teachers and students) gave a lot of data. Data were analysed with multivariate models.
